I don’t know how often you are in a room with 16 kids ranging from the ages of 5 to 12 but you can probably imagine that it gets pretty loud. This would describe most Sundays in Kids’ Church. I don’t think that there has been a Sunday where I haven’t had to tell them to be quiet. Now don’t get me wrong, I love the kids, but they cannot be silent.
That is until today.
Today, we talked a prayer.
We talked about how we are supposed to pray in a quiet place and to not be distracted by anything that is around us. Usually when we end our time in Kids’ Church with prayer I ask if anyone wants to pray or I pray and we move onto the next activity. But this time was different.
I felt God telling me to do something that we have never done before.
We were going to have a time by ourselves to pray to God.
So, they got to sit or stand wherever they wanted to when we prayed. All I said was that we were going to have time to pray by ourselves and that we are to be quiet so others can pray. In all honesty, I thought that I was going to have to tell them to be quiet at least twice.
Once we started though, there was silence.
Pure silence.
The type of silence where you can hear a pin drop.
The silence where you think that there is nobody in the room.
The silence that I hear when I first arrive at the church and there are no kids there.
The silence of prayer.
Not one time did I have to say “be quiet we are praying” or “hang on we are almost done”. They could have kept going for several minutes.
As a teacher, I was not only crying because of the silence but the fact that they were truly praying to God.
As I watched them during this silence I could see them giving their hearts to God. They were asking God to help them during the hard times and praising Him for the good times.
They were praying!
As adults, we can learn a lesson or two from those kids. We can learn to take time away from everyone else and pray to God. We can learn that no matter what your age is, you can pray to God. We can learn praying doesn’t have to be hard. All that it is, is a conversation with God. We can learn to have child-like faith. We can learn to take time to be silent and to pray to God and to listen to Him.
Above all, we can learn to have a true intentional relationship with our Father in Heaven.
All it takes is a little bit of silence.
